Awesome day at Mt Lofty gardens!

Well, I think someone must be looking out for me because after a truly awful week I had the most wonderful day on Saturday at the Mt Lofty botanic gardens with our much loved friends Linda, Nick and Lily. After a delicious picnic lunch, we spent our time photographing fungus, watching our kids roll down the steep grassy hill (some things never change, thank goodness!), walking, talking and laughing. My laughter deficit of the entire previous week was more than made up for in just a few hours! Guy was relaxed and happy too and I could just feel all of the tension lifting.....being in such beautiful surroundings with such wonderful company.....heavenly! Of course the time flew by at a ridiculous rate, as it always does, but there never seems to be enough time does there?
Linda set her camera on timer to take the shot of us all (Linda, Nick, me and Guy at the back, Noah, Lily and Grace in front) and she also sneakily shot the pic of me lying on the ground getting up close and personal with a Fly Agaric toadstool. I really dislike having my picture taken but she always manages to sneak a few.....and they're always good.
Fungus has always held an enormous fascination for me....it is so connected to Faery lore and it also has those wonderful 'Alice in Wonderland' connotations. I'm determined to one day sculpt the caterpillar on his mushroom.....another one for the ever growing list!
I hope to be able to post once more this week before I go in to hospital on Friday. I'll be spending the next four days hard at work in the studio so hopefully will have something worth sharing.
Till next time.

It's so nice to see you your family and friends in such a relaxed pose.. I think you really needed that time with family... What a great pic of you and the fungi.... I too like fungi and fungus... mushrooms...

  3. Pattee - I have to go back for another surgery to take out the tissue expanders and put in the final, permanent implants. It's the final surgical step in what has been a very long and stressful process (beginning of course with the damn breast cancer and mastectomy in the first place!) but the result is really worth it when all is said and done. I have been so lucky to have an amazing plastic surgeon and I haven't felt this good about myself physically for years, if ever. This last op is nowhere near as complicated as the last one and I should be able to come home the next day....fingers crossed!
Can't wait to just be finished with it all now.....almost there.
    Love Lorell xx

  8. Hi Lorell,

    Hope the surgery goes well.

I'm not sure if you remember me. My name is Eva. We used to go to high school together. I think we first met in the sick room. It seems like a million years ago, yet I remember it with great clarity.

I love looking at your work. It's fantastic Lorell.

    Cheers,
    Eva xo

  9. Oh my goodness, Eva...of course I remember you! We were pretty inseparable for a couple of years....I still have all the crazy notes and letters you used to write me....wow! I hope you are well and happy...would love to hear from you, I've thought about you often over the years.
    My e-mail is nafab@internode.on.net

  10. I'm really happy that the surgery was successful and that you are back home now. I had a look through some of your blog entries. The whole 'cancer surgery and treatment' stuff must have been really difficult. Two of my close friends were diagnosed with breast cancer. I'm really glad that you are ok and that you are at the end of all of that now.

Yes, I've thought about you often over the years too. I was surprised when I came across your website and thought that I would touch base.

Ha! You kept all the notes and letters that I wrote??? You still have them after all this time??? You just inspired me to write a crazy note to my daughter.

I'll get in touch via your email address and will send a message later in the week. I'll attach a few photographs. Be prepared. I'm silvery grey these days!

    Love Eva xo

  12. this is the first time i've had the pleasure to read your blog today i'to am a huge fan of sculpting and sci-fi fantasy type things and have felt for many years that these things i create have some how been swimming around in my head just waiting to get out, i've never known any one other than myself and now you who felt that way which is comforting to say the least, i thought i was a bit odd, i have a blog called Morton and freinds, i just started it and there is not much there yet, but sure would appreciate any feed back you'd be willing to give, i've only been sculpting a few months but i'm hooked, i usually draw paint or write, i know i talk to much, anyway great work, your inspirational, god bless
